How to Wear Pearls

As we've seen, pearls are beautiful, unique and elegant. Before cultivation they were only available to the royal and the wealthy, kept as treasures and worn as status symbols. Nowadays, pearls are much more readily available, they are sophisticated and fashionable, and can be worn by anyone.

White pearls are timeless, they are a classic and you can't go wrong wearing them. For everyday wear, classic pearls or even treated coloured pearls can really add to your look. However, it is advisable to avoid wearing pearl necklaces, earrings and bracelets together for casual wear, as you will look overdressed. If you have short hair, or are tying your hair up, dangling pearl necklaces look stunning and draw attention to your face and neck. Long strands of pearls can go over tops and pearl bracelets look great with short sleeves as you can show them off. Try chunky baroque pearls for a fashionable, modern look.

With work wear, pearls can add elegance and authority to your look, they are also sophisticated without drawing too much attention to your jewellery. You want people to focus on your excellent work not your attire, but looking fantastic and wearing pearls can definitely boost your confidence for those more difficult days at work. Again, don't combine pearl jewellery, stick to one item at a time in the office. A subtle one strand, classic necklace or stud pearl earrings compliment your look without overpowering it.

For evening/occasion wear, pearls look elegant and womanly with an evening gown. This is the time to wear multiple items of pearl jewellery – necklaces, earrings and bracelets compliment each other to create a beautiful classic look. The type of necklace you should wear depends on your dress, if you're wearing a plain, one colour dress you can opt for large, long necklaces. If your dress is heavily embellished, go for small pearls instead. Dangling earrings draw attention to the neckline of your dress, and if you're going sleeveless, think about a pearl necklace and bracelet combination.

Many women choose to wear pearls on their wedding day, which you can read more about in our blog post here. Opt for a shade that match your wedding dress, and the necklace should rest just below your collarbone. Dangling earrings look beautiful and romantic, especially when paired with a sophisticated up-do hairstyle.

If you feel that traditional pearl necklaces are generally reserved for older women, you can think about pearl pendant necklaces. The pendant is the focus of the necklace, and can be a single pearl or pearls with silver, gold, or other precious stones. These are much more modern and fashionable at the moment, and many younger women may prefer them. Other things to consider are treated coloured Freshwater pearls, or maybe going for the beautiful darker tones of Tahitian pearls. These can be chosen as an accessory for a particular outfit, but are also very versatile and will look great with almost anything.
